I used to burn them to CD, but it got to be too much. Now it's all on external hard drives, with backup hard drives.

I have enough on CD to keep me happy in the car. In the next few years though, there will be terrabyte memory sticks that will hold all the lossless files you can stuff on it. And all music players (home stereo, car stereo, boom boxes) will have a plugin for the memory sticks. CD's are going out in the same way cassettes and vinyl records did. IMHO

I recently lost almost all of my downloads and buys which were on CDs & DVDs, including the Fillmore 69 run, in a fire where they were stored temporarily. Multiple backups of the most valuable things might be a good idea.

You might also watch out to keep CD and DVDs in a cool dark place to prevent deterioration which happens earlier than experts had thought.

Even hard disks need to be spun up every few months, and it might be a good idea to transfer them off and reformat the HD every year or 2.

spacedface, sorry to hear about your losing that stuff. I think I can help you with the files for the run you mentioned if you need to replace it. Let me know if you do.

it's always good to stay in the boat. As Willard suggests:
"Never get out of the boat"

seek and ye shall find...

Thanks for offer. I'll stick with MP3 for some of the stuff and take my time rebuilding. I've bought albums again on CD and lost many of those multiple times already, so I don't mind being a bit jolly roger!

Even as easy as it is, it's a pain to download all the time. Collecting things can be a disease.

There's always something new I find here, like unexplored 1968 and:
